Join us at the 8th annual Adolescent Health Symposium where healthcare providers, young people, and adolescent health experts will present on topics such as: ways youth can navigate difficult conversations, wellness care and continuity of care, teen legal rights surrounding consent, and more.

Continuing Education

Participants can earn continuing education in the following areas. To receive credit, participants must complete an online verification of attendance/evaluation. Certificates will be mailed out within 30 days of the event conclusion.

  • CNE – This nursing continuing professional development activity was approved by Montana Nurses Association, an accredited approver with distinction by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Speakers

Jeff Hutchinson, MD

Dr. Hutchinson served 25 years as an Army Physician before retiring and moving to Austin. He has a BS in chemistry from West Point and a medical degree from the University of California in San Francisco. His combat, clinical and academic leadership experience provides expertise in strategic planning, communication and education including as a current advisor for the National Academy of Medicine Culture of Health Program. As an Adolescent Medicine specialist currently working at People’s Community Clinic he cares for children and young adults ages 10 to 25.

Celia Neavel, MD, FSAHM, FAAFP

With the support of People’s Community Clinic, Dr. Neavel established the Center for Adolescent Health and the GOALS programs 30 years ago. The Center for Adolescent Health serves youth ages 10-24 years old who often have complex medical and psychosocial conditions. Dr. Neavel is Medical Director of People’s public school health center at Manor Mustang Clinic.

Sharita Ambrose, DHEd, MPH, CHES, CHWI

Dr. Ambrose, has a 22-year career specializing in HIV/AIDS education and advocacy. She is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and a Certified Community Health Worker Instructor (CHWI). Sharita holds an array of degrees including a Doctorate and a Master of Public Health from A.T. Still University, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Health Administration from Texas Southern University.

La’Toya E. Swan, CHW, CHWI, CHES

La’Toya is dedicated to community health and wellness, which can be traced back two decades when she began volunteering at non-profit organizations in her community. She is a certified Community Health Worker (CHW), Community Health Worker Instructor (CHWI) Community Education Specialist (CHES), Health and Wellness coach (PT) and has a Bachelor’s degree in Community Health. Her passion work covers HIV/AIDS, HIV testing/counseling, Black maternal health, postpartum depression, anxiety disorders and personal training/nutrition.

Amber Sarker, PhD

Amber Sarker is an Associate Professor who teaches Learning Frameworks at Austin Community College. She is also in charge of the department’s mentoring program for new faculty, a member of Ascender faculty, a Faculty Onboarding Facilitator for new ACC faculty, and a member of the Liberal Arts Gateway initiative. She graduated from Texas State University in 2019 with a PhD in Developmental Literacy. Before Amber worked at ACC, she taught for colleges of Education in Montana, Indiana, and Michigan.

Shawnee Farley, JD

Staff Attorney Shawnee Farley is a member of the Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) team at Texas Legal Services Center (TLSC). Partnered with the Texas Health Action’s Kind Clinic, Shawnee serves the LGBTQ+ and HIV+ community, with a focus on Name and Gender Marker Corrections. She is a graduate of Penn State Law and licensed to practice law in both Arkansas and Texas.

Sreeja Kuppam

Sreeja Kuppam is currently a sophomore at UT Austin who is double majoring in Plan II and Informatics on the pre-med track. She is a published author of two books, hopes to go into the field of gynecology and women’s health in the future.
