Volunteer Spotlight: Meghan Hughes

Incoming Foundation Board President

People’s is proud to welcome Meghan Hughes as Foundation Board President for the coming year. Meghan previously served as Secretary and has been involved with People’s since 2012.

Her commitment to health care began at age 14, when she volunteered in the stroke unit of her hometown hospital. The experience showed her what compassionate care can mean during vulnerable moments.

Years later, Meghan attended a Young Professionals for People’s event and heard former CEO Regina Rogoff describe the clinic’s commitment to treating every patient with dignity and respect. That message stayed with her, and so did People’s.

“The mission has never wavered, and being part of an organization that treats every patient with dignity regardless of their socioeconomic standing continues to feel so special.”

As Foundation Board President, Meghan is excited about People’s new pharmacy and its holistic approach to care. Special programs addressing chronic disease, the clinic’s partnership with Farm Share and the Central Texas Food Bank, and other supports help address medical needs and critical issues like food insecurity.

Meghan also hopes more people learn about People’s history. The clinic began 56 years ago when volunteers responded to a community need by opening a clinic in a church basement near the University of Texas. That grassroots spirit continues in an organization that now serves nearly 22,000 patients each year.

She believes affordable health care depends on people who donate, volunteer, advocate, and share why this work matters.

“When more of us are willing to speak up, we widen the circle of support.”

Meghan is especially inspired by the support patients receive after a life-changing diagnosis such as diabetes. Along with medical treatment, patients can receive nutrition education and learn how to cook healthier meals at People’s teaching kitchen.

“It’s not just treatment. It’s giving people the tools to live well.”
