PEOPLE'S COMMUNITY CLINIC GIVES ANNUAL "W. NEAL KOCUREK" AWARD
AUSTIN, TX – May 14, 2007 –People’s Community Clinic today announced that the St. David’s Community Health Foundation will be the 2007 recipient of the W. Neal Kocurek award, in recognition of its healthcare advocacy and its 10 year sustaining support of the programs at the People’s Community Clinic.
The St. David’s Community Health Foundation made its first grant to the Clinic in 1996. Since then, the Foundation has provided more than $12 million to ensure that the Clinic can provide quality healthcare to the uninsured. The St. David’s Community Health Foundation has shown extraordinary vision by providing sustaining funds so crucial to the health of any non-profit.
For more than 36 years, People’s Community Clinic has worked with individuals and partners throughout the community to provide quality healthcare to the under- and uninsured in Central Texas. In an effort to honor the memory of one of its strongest advocates and partners, the late W. Neal Kocurek, Ph.D., the clinic established the W. Neal Kocurek award. The award recognizes exceptional members of the community who embody the Clinic’s belief that access to quality healthcare benefits the entire Austin community.
“People’s Community Clinic continues to offer healthcare to the uninsured and underinsured in our community in large part because of the vision of St. David’s Community Health Foundation,” said Regina Rogoff, executive director, People’s Community Clinic. “The Foundation’s support over the past 10 years, has allowed People’s to provide and grow its high quality of healthcare to those Central Texas residents most in need.”
The W. Neal Kocurek award is presented annually at the People’s Community Clinic’s, “There’s No Such Thing as a Free Lunch,” luncheon. This year’s event is planned for May 14, at the Renaissance Austin Hotel. Each year, the luncheon honors the W. Neal Kocurek award recipients and raises major funds for the Clinic’s ongoing operational expenses. Close to 60 percent of the Clinic’s funding each year comes from private support. People’s Community Clinic remains indebted to the individuals and foundations that continue to give generously to support its mission.
As President and CEO of St. David’s Health Care System, a member of the Indigent Care Collaboration and ex-officio member of People’s Community Clinic’s board of directors, the late Dr. Kocurek was committed to ensuring high-quality health care for all Central Texans.
People’s Community Clinic offers comprehensive, community-wide health
care services that include family planning; prenatal care; pediatrics; adolescent
medicine and adult medical care; as well as health education, prevention
and social services. Founded in 1970, the Clinic is among the oldest and
most successful independent clinics in the country providing high quality
health care to 11,000 uninsured and medically underserved children and adults
each year.
