Recent Donor News & Notable Gifts to the People's Community Clinic
United Way Capital Area has made a gift of $55,000 in support of the Chronic Disease Management Program, which empowers patients and their families to better manage chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. The CDMP is a multi-disciplinary team that consists of medical providers, nutrition staff, behavioral health specialists, an endocrinologist, and a Case Manager to oversee all aspects of patient care and education.
Focusing on initiatives that educate and motivate patients to make behavioral changes, the CDMP provides nutrition education and counseling, toolkits and action plans to manage specific conditions.
“We are so grateful to United Way for their support of this innovative program,” says PCC CEO Regina Rogoff. “Recognizing that poor diet and chronic diseases are fundamentally linked, they are helping us to use every tool in our arsenal, and even invent some new ones, to empower our patients to manage their chronic conditions. United Way has been a valued partner to the clinic for many years. Together, we are achieving our shared goal of a healthier community.”

Michael & Susan Dell Foundation Support Healthy Families
The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation has awarded a grant of $481,250 to People’s Community Clinic in support of the “Healthy Families” initiative, which aims to reduce barriers to primary care access and improve the health outcomes of children, adolescents, and adults. With Texas continuing to have the highest uninsured rate in the nation, PCC fills a vital need by providing a comprehensive medical home for 10,000 low-income patients. The Clinic anticipates delivering more than 32,000 health and wellness visits to Austin area families in 2011.
MSDF is a leader in addressing critical health issues facing our community, state, and beyond with its commitment to advancing access to quality health care services for the under- and uninsured, and promoting wellness initiatives that instill healthy lifestyle behaviors. Since 2003, the foundation has contributed more than $1.6 million in grants that have been instrumental to PCC’s growth and ability to provide a continuity of high-level care that fosters good health and wellness. The Clinic is also proud to have been selected as a partner organization in MSDF’s inaugural Be Well Walk on October 2nd. This new effort is designed to encourage Austin’s families to make informed and simple changes to improve nutrition and increase physical activity.
“We are extremely grateful that the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation has chosen to make the health and well-being of Central Texas a priority”, said PCC CEO Regina Rogoff. “Their on-going generous support of the ‘Healthy Families’ initiative is furthering our efforts to effectively serve more uninsured families through a range of high quality services, positively impacting lives and strengthening our community”.

Topfer Family Foundation Funds PCC Initiative
People's Community Clinic received a grant of $52,500 from Topfer Family Foundation in support of “Healthy Mothers, Happy Families.” This initiative is designed to ensure excellent birth outcomes for expectant mothers and a healthy start in life for their newborns. This year, PCC anticipates providing 8,100 prenatal visits to 1,460 prenatal patients, and expects that 800 infants will be delivered into the Clinic’s practice. The Prenatal Program continues to produce strong birth outcomes, with 95% of the babies born in 2010 being of normal birth weight. Emphasizing prevention as an essential component of primary care, the Pediatric Program schedules well-child checks at regular intervals, allowing minor health problems, as well as complicated issues, to be addressed early. The clinic estimates that it will provide 8,150 pediatric visits (including 4,000 well-child checks) to 2,400 pediatric patients in 2011.
The Topfer Family Foundation gift makes that possible. The foundation is committed to helping people connect to the tools and resources they need to build self-sufficient and fulfilling lives. Since its first gift in support of PCC’s Tandem Prenatal and Parenting Program in 2002, TFF has contributed more than $500,000 in grants to People’s Community Clinic projects that focus on the well-being of children and families.
“We are so grateful to have the Topfer Family Foundation as a long-time partner,” said PCC CEO Regina Rogoff. “Their sustaining support has enabled the clinic to expand its capacity to serve the community and ensures that the families who make PCC their medical home can rely on us for high quality care. We very much appreciate the fact that Topfer Family Foundation chose to make ‘Health Mothers, Happy Families’ a priority this year. The trusting relationship that staff develops with expectant moms and their families enables the clinic to provide the finest care for these children.”

RGK Foundation Supports GOALS
In keeping with its mission to be a catalyst for positive change through innovative projects that advance health, the RGK Foundation has awarded a grant of $30,000 to support the GOALS Developmental & Behavioral Health Program at People’s Community Clinic. The GOALS program was formalized in 2005 as a unique approach to address the significant access challenge in Central Texas for ongoing coordination of mental and physical health needs of low-income youth. By integrating behavioral and developmental health services for children and teens into a primary care model, GOALS promotes optimal developmental functioning, wellness, and mental health in patients ages 4-19. The Clinic annually screens approximately 1,500 patients during routine medical visits, and follows over 250 patients with more intensive services.
Since its founding in 1966, the RGK Foundation has championed causes that promote the well-being of children and families. The Foundation has had a true impact on PCC’s work to enhance our community’s health by contributing more than $520,000 in grants over the past ten years to support comprehensive patient programs and collaborative outreach projects that deliver high quality care to the medically underserved.
“We sincerely appreciate the long-time partnership of the RGK Foundation”, said PCC CEO Regina Rogoff. “Their generous support of the GOALS program is strengthening the Clinic’s role as a regional leader in the care of youth with complex, and often unmet, mental and physical health needs. Combining efforts, we are achieving our shared goal of a healthier and stronger community.”

October
We would like to take a moment to honor Dick Neavel, a longtime supporter of People’s Community Clinic who passed away on October 18, 2010. He and his wife, Nancy, have been active members of the Austin community since moving here in 1998. They moved here to be closer to their children and grandchildren, including their daughter, Celia Neavel, M.D., who founded and directs PCC’s Center for Adolescent Health and the GOALS Program, a developmental behavioral primary care program at PCC.
Dick was a dedicated volunteer and philanthropist, giving generously of his time, talent, and treasure to many local organizations including People’s Community Clinic. In 2002, the Neavel family created the Bicky Trager Patient Education Fund to support family planning and health education programs at PCC. These critical funds have supported health education efforts over the years. PCC’s Health Educators work with the Center for Adolescent Health and with the Departments of Women’s Health and Adult Medicine.
We have been very fortunate to have known Dick Neavel and to have been a recipient of his great generosity. His life and example have also inspired others to support PCC with memorial contributions. It is our pleasure to share that we have received many donations in memory of Dick Neavel. We are so proud to be a part of this amazing tribute to his memory.
