Byington-Trager Well Women’s Health Fund
Founded by Ellen Byington, the Byington-Trager Well Women’s Health Fund supports life-saving, preventive care for women at People’s Community Clinic. Ellen knows firsthand the importance of early detection. As a two year breast cancer survivor, she wants to be sure other women have the benefit of regular screenings. In addition to providing family planning and contraception, well-woman exams screen for breast and cervical cancer and a host of other issues. Donors to the Byington-Trager Well Women’s Health Fund ensure that PCC can provide critical needed services to the thousands of women we serve.
When detected early, breast cancer has a 98% 5-year survival rate. Early detection makes the difference in cases of cervical cancer as well. The 5-year survival rate for cervical cancer detected in early stages is 93%. Texas fares worse than the national average for cervical cancer screening attainment among every demographic. This means that millions of women go without pap smears, and potentially without treatment, every year in Texas.
Women without health insurance are the most likely to go without clinical breast exams and cervical cancer screenings. When detection is delayed, the effects can be lethal. For many women, in Texas and around the country, the well-woman exam is the only visit they'll have with a health care provider during the year. To promote the health of Texas women and families, PCC will continue to provide these services, despite recent cuts in state funding.

The American Cancer Society and American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommend clinical breast exams and cervical cancer screenings at least every 3 years for women 21 years of age and older. Unfortunately, not all women are able to access this care. The Byington-Trager Well Women's Health Fund is making the difference by supporting this routine preventive care and keeping PCC patients and our community healthier.
